Wolfgang Vaatz Bio

"My nature scenes are not merely adornment; they are statements engaging the viewer/wearer to be a steward of our natural world."

"I have chosen jewelry since 2014 as a medium to carry my interpretations of an undisturbed natural world; to emphasize its intrinsic value and preciousness.   Nature is essential for us living on earth.  My jewelry celebrates this link to nature."

Having a background as a painter and sculptor, Wolfgang takes an unconventional approach.  He creates his scenes by melting and fusing precious metals.  With great care, he chooses natural gold flakes and nuggets specifically for the artwork.  This unrefined placer gold is environmentally friendly.  It is obtained from prospectors in the United States who pan with minimal environmental impact.

Since summer 2020, in the midst of covid-19, Wolfgang has been drawn to introduce color to his jewelry work as fired enamel.  Being familiar with glazes from his large stoneware creations of the past,  he enjoys the different quick firings of vitreous enamel.  Many individually fired layers are applied on top of each other to achieve the desired color and depth and the luminescence of the reflective silver underneath.

"Nature in all its colors is so serene, beautiful, and inspiring; I had to add color to my palette."

Wolfgang's jewelry work has been prestigiously recognized.  Among the various awards he has received is the international Saul  Bell Design Award in 3 consecutive years since 2016, the Centurion's Emerging Designer Winner, and the 2018 Manufacturing  Jewelers and Silvermiths Vision Award.
